Sgt. William Patrick O'Malley
Police Sgt. O'Malley was on the scene as the members of the Dillinger gang robbed the First National Bank in East Chicago, Indiana. As the robbers left the bank, shots were fired on both sides and O'Malley steadfastly held his ground when faced with machine gun fire allegedly shot by John Dillinger.
O'Malley reportedly shot John Dillinger several times but Dillinger was wearing a bullet proof vest.
O'Malley was 43 when he died. He left behind his wife Letitia and 3 daughters, Agnes, Frances and Margaret.
Sgt. William Patrick O'Malley is only one of the many law enforcement officers and agents who were killed in the line of duty, attempting to stop and capture the gangsters of the 1930's.
